Bar Leadership Academy
WHAT IS BLA?
The Bar Leadership Academy (BLA) is a special program designed to help emerging leaders of the legal profession in Kansas City develop the skills, knowlege, and experience needed to become leaders in both the profession and the community. During this eight-month program, new attorneys participate in six interactive leadership training sessions featuring prominent speakers, instructors, and discussion facilitators. Throughout the program, participants also attend networking events and work in teams to organize and administer service projects that have a positive effect in the greater Kansas City community.
Through this curriculum, the Bar Leadership Academy aims to:
- Enhance participants’ leadership skills so they can better excel in service to the profession and the community;
- Nurture and encourage graduates to seek leadership positions in Bar organizations, the judiciary, and community organizations;
- Create a critical mass of diverse future leaders within the legal community;
- Foster pride, commitment and participation in professional association activities;
- Provide leadership opportunities in the community for all graduates.

Attorneys interested in participating in the Bar Leadership Academy may apply during the application period by submitting an application form along with a letter of recommendation from a judge or attorney with whom the applicant has worked closely.
Applications are reviewed and participants chosen by the Bar Leadership Academy Planning Committee, which is comprised of past BLA graduates. The committee selects participants to represent a demographic cross-section of the greater Kansas City legal community, including geographic, racial, gender, and public and private law representation. To be considered, each applicant must be a current member of KCMBA and agree to commit to attending five of six leadership training sessions and one of two service projects.
Once selected, participants must submit a payment of $575 to cover the cost of the program, which includes catering and refreshments at all events.
A limited number of scholarships are available through the KCMBA YLS and Diversity Sections.
