Ross T. Roberts Trial Academy
The Ross T. Roberts Trial Academy is an annual program organized in conjunction with the Young Lawyers Section and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri that is designed to teach new lawyers trial advocacy skills. The program provides participating attorneys with training and guidance from experienced litigators and judges and allows them to practice trial techniques in a realistic courtroom setting. Led by United States Magistrate Judge Robert E. Larsen, training sessions cover voir dire, opening statements, direct and cross examinations, evidentiary foundations, expert witnesses, and closing arguments. The program is eligible for 50-55 CLE credit hours in Missouri and Kansas, including two hours of ethics.
For many years, Dr. John Ward and his associates, Kurt Krueger, PhD, and Alicia Hiles, MA, MS, CRC, have volunteered to assist KCMBA's Trial Academy in educating Barristers on the examination of expert witnesses. They have prepared the necessary expert reports for the various fictional cases used by the Academy, served as witnesses for the Barristers' demonstrations on the direct and cross-examination of expert witnesses, and provided advice and guidance to the Barristers on tactical methods for dealing with expert witnesses. KCMBA and the Trial Academy are indebted to Dr. Ward, Dr. Krueger and Ms. Hiles for their past and continued support of this popular and highly successful program on trial advocacy.
